We were lucky enough to have stayed at two really nice hotels while in Italy: (1) J.K. Place Florence, and (2) Park Hyatt Milan.
J.K. Place Florence:
Most of our travel bookings, whether it's flights or lodgings, are booked on points or heavily discounted rates. Unfortunately, due to a little mix up with a reduced rate I booked at the Westin Florence, and NYE being prime time for traveling, we ended up booking the J.K. Place Florence through a Virtuoso agent. With Virtuoso benefits, we received a complimentary lunch or dinner and a room category upgrade.
Overall, I really like the J.K. Place Florence. It is like staying with a wealthy relative. The boutique hotel was right in front of the Santa Maria Novella church, and walking distance to the train station. The rooms were small, but very functional. The layout and amenities were well thought out. I believed we stayed in a superior room.
The sheets were organic, so it was a bit rough. The shower amenities were nice. They did not get replaced on a daily basis, but I didn't care for it to be switched out. It's less wasteful that way. The breakfast spread was pretty boring, but service was spectacular.

Park Hyatt Milan:
The Park Hyatt Milan was definitely more impressive than the J.K. Place Florence. The rooms were twice as big, and the restroom probably four times as big.
The service was also spectacular. They made reservations for us at a nice restaurant on New Years Day. They also purchased our Last Supper tickets, and charged it to the room.
