STOP PRETENDING

I just finished reading an article about traveling, and it reminded me to stop the pretense. "A lot of travel can be about pretending," such as going to the iconic museums, visiting the popular sights, taking a bus tour to listen to a tour guide talk about the famous and the history, etc. In the end, a whole day was spent doing something that one usually wouldn't normally do. But at least the pictures said "I've been there." Reflecting on my recent trips, I realized I've quickly forgotten my original mindset with regards to travel, and I've been pretentious.

My first international trip, as an adult, was to Paris, France. During this trip, the Louvre, Versaille, Eiffel Tower, etc. were pretty much at the bottom of the list. I prioritized eating, shopping, people watching, and just doing things I enjoyed. That trip was the most memorable trip, and not only because it was my honeymoon. It was also because I traveled the way I wanted to.

Fast forward to our previous Japan trip. A day in Kyoto was spent looking at temples and shrines. Did I enjoy it? I would like to say "yes," but really, "it was okay...." If I were to do it all over again, I would have skipped Kyoto, and spent all the time in Tokyo.

So, it's time I stopped pretending, and travel the way I want. Here's to the next big destination! I can't wait!!!!
